The GB Masters Wheelchair Basketball team has made history at the FIMBA European Championships in Athens by playing its first competitive game on foreign soil.
Although the proposed tournament was cancelled at short notice, members of the squad still travelled to Greece to promote Masters wheelchair basketball and support the game’s international development.
Based at the Olympic Athletic Centre of Athens, the team took part in daily training sessions led by Gary Davidson PLY. The programme focused on shooting, passing, dribbling, chair control, conditioning and tactical development.
The week ended with a joint session, a scrimmage, and a competitive game against players from Panathinaikos Wheelchair Basketball Club, the reigning Greek professional champions. The players were also recognised during the opening ceremony alongside more than 200 teams from around the world.
The trip marked another important step for the world’s first Masters Wheelchair Basketball programme, launched with support from British Wheelchair Basketball and Mobility in Motion. It also helped raise awareness of the potential for wheelchair basketball to be included in future international Masters competitions.
