The 27-year-old guard was a key contributor down the stretch last season, and we’re excited to see what he can do in a full year with the team!

Jaz brings a lot to the table on offense; his main role last season was to fire away from downtown, keeping opposing defenses honest and drawing defenders out to the three-point line. He attempted 6.4 threes a game while only attempting 7.8 shots a game overall, and his clear understanding of his role on the team makes him a dependable player who will work within a range of lineups. Shooting 36% from three last season on such high volume suggests that Jaz is truly a rare talent from range, and he will command an enormous amount of attention from any team unlucky enough to be on the receiving end of his sharpshooting.

There is much more to Jaz’s game than just his shooting though, and his time at university in Canada allowed him to develop and showcase his all-around game. After a successful spell with St. Lawrence’s College in Ontario, where he won the 2015 Ontario College Player of the Year award, Jaz moved across town to Queen’s University. The move presented Jaz with a new challenge, as Queen’s compete in the Ontario Universities Athletics Conference, a step up from the college setting in which he thrived. Jaz proved undaunted by the jump, however, and put up over 17 points and 5 assists a game in his debut season with the team. He followed it up with an even more impressive second year, proving himself to be a big-game player dropping a university career-high 37 points in the opening game of the season.

Though settling into a role as a shooter for the Rockets, Jaz demonstrated a talent for playmaking during his time in Canada, with impressive assist numbers and a catalogue of handle combos ready to unsettle any defender. He finished his final season at Queen’s averaging just shy of 20PPG while taking just over a third of his shots from three-point range. Jaz’s numbers show he can clearly cause problems for defenders all over the court. With the threat of his shooting, Jaz will create opportunities for himself and others to make plays simply by his presence on the court. Coach Pearson is “excited to see Jaz grow in his first full season with the Rockets,” adding that the team’s system will “highlight his perimeter scoring ability and capacity to spread the court”.

Jaz will certainly be one to watch as he settles in this season, and we can’t wait to see what he can do in the Rockets number 15 jersey this season!

Jaz Bains returns for his first full season with the Rockets this year after joining in February last season, promising to bring elite shooting and spacing to Coach Pearson’s offense.
